I Listen, CO

Every so often I will be posting under the ‘Derailed’ heading. This is for posts that are outside my normal comfort area…indie rock/pop.

Went to my first show at Cervantes last night.  I saw The Devin Townsend Project and Cynic open up for Between The Buried and Me.  I really liked the venue.  The sound was good, it’s all one level and the bartenders were friendly and served good microbrews and had a heavy hand when pouring drinks.

I went to the show with a friend of a friend from California and we ended up getting there a little late, so we didn’t catch the instrumental Scale The Summit.

Devin Townsend was entertaining in a geek sorta way.  Telling stories about masturbation while yelling at the crowd to get their lighters in the air.  He couldn’t quite recreate the sound of his latest album, Addicted, without the help of Anneke can Giersbergen, but he still sounded great.  I would actually see him headline a show if he ever came around.

Cynic was on next.  This is a progressive metal band that put out one album in 1993 and then disappeared until recently. They are a talented groups of musicians, but to be honest, I just couldn’t get into their performance.  It probably didn’t help that I was fighting a pretty bad head cold, but they just didn’t do it for me.

BTBAM were next and they brought it!  From the first riff of Obfuscation to the final scream of White Walls they were on fire.  The only thing that blew me away more than the music was Tommy Rogers appearance.  This guy can scream with the best of them, let out guttural growls for 17 minute songs and looks like he could be in a boy band.  Well, maybe that’s going a little far, but this guy does not look like the sounds coming out his mouth.

Toward the end of the night my cold got the best of me and I wasn’t feeling so good, but I’m still glad I powered through…
