I Listen, CO

Just got back from the Nile show at the Bluebird.  I still can’t hear so well, and the ringing in my ears is preventing me from sleeping.  Nile is a death metal band from South Carolina, made up of Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade on vocals and guitar, Chris Lollis on bass and George Kollias on drums.  Blast beat drums.  It’s George’s extreme drumming that is keeping me awake this many hours after the show.  The dude looked like he was in a Saw sequel and if he slowed his drumming down to 200bpm, he would meet a gruesome death.  Seriously, how does a human being drum like that.  As Brian said, he manually makes the sounds Ministry had to use a drum machine for.

Then you’ve got Karl.  He’s the creative force behind Nile.   He is the one constant member of the band.  He also seems to have a Ph.D in Egyptology and H.P Lovecraft literature.  You wouldn’t really know this unless you studied his lyrics though, because even though he urges the crowd to ‘sing along’, most of the vocals come out as grunts and growls.  They are some powerful grunts and growls though!

I have really gotten into Nile’s latest album, Those Whom the Gods Detest, but seeing them live made me come around to their older stuff.  It’s just so much more powerful live.  Highlights of the night included opener “Kafir!”, “Ithyphallic”, “Papyrus” and closer “Black Seeds of Vengeance”.

We caught Immolation and Krisiun open up.  Immolation was worth seeing.  Krisiun didn’t do it for me.
