Garth Brooks. Pepsi Center. March 2015 My daughter is pretty open minded about music. She really has no choice with me as her father. That didn’t stop her from informing me that she finds country music to be boring though. There was a part of me that wanted to convince her otherwise, but then I

Stevie Wonder. Pepsi Center. 03.17.15 Anticipation is a killer. I’m fortunate enough to be able to attend quite a few shows every year, so it’s a rare occasion that I find myself with that awkward feeling. I live by the theory that going to a show is a perfect way to pass the time while

Ariel Pink. Bluebird Theater. 02.14.15 According to the Interweb, Ariel Pink is indie rock’s most hated man. He is a misogynistic troll who defends the rights of sexual predators and has the nerve to criticize Madonna. He is a living, breathing meme. He claims to be the male version of Grimes, but the female version

Sleater-Kinney / Lizzo. Ogden Theatre. 02.12.15 Seeing the name Sleater Kinney on the marquee at the Ogden Theatre last night was quite a sight, but it didn’t stir nostalgic emotions for everyone on Colfax. As the line stretched out in front of the theater, past Angelo’s Records to the other side of Ogden St., many

Winter on the Rocks. Red Rocks. 01.30.15 It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since I talked a group of people into going to Red Rocks in January. The first winter concert to be held at the amphitheater showcased Atmosphere and Common. I wasn’t all that excited about seeing either act, but I was extremely excited

Mark Kozelek. The Soiled Dove Underground. 01.29.15 Many lessons were learned last time Mark Kozelek came to Denver to perform at the Soiled Dove Underground. Koz doesn’t get laid in Denver. He doesn’t drink or smoke pot. He doesn’t like the outdoors and has nothing in common with the “sporty” couples of Colorado. But the

Lucero / Drag The River. The Gothic Theatre. Englewood, Colorado. 12.29.14 Making small talk about the weather is something people do in uncomfortable situations where no other common ground can be found, but when you’re standing outside in subzero temperatures it’s the elephant that refuses to be ignored. As Gary Lee (of Gary Lee’s Motor

Lagwagon. Summit Music Hall. Denver, CO 12.11.14 Live Review and Setlist. It’s January 14th, 1995. I am about to see Lagwagon for the first time. It’s a Saturday. I sleep in late because I don’t have anywhere to be. I roll out of bed (a mattress on the ground) sometime in the late afternoon. After

Rap music is about two things, lyrics and beats. Take either away and you’ve got poetry slam or bass music, neither of which I’m very fond of. So it’s a testament to El-P’s production that last night’s show worked despite the sound problems. Killer Mike and El-P are both hip-hop powerhouses in their own right,

There is a movie that came out in 1996 called Beautiful Girls. The title and trailer led many to believe it was just another chick flick, but the Scott Rosenberg/Ted Demme film was a pretty accurate study of small town America. The plot follows the lives of friends/enemies during the weekend of their high school
