John Moreland. Hi-Dive. 05.07.15 John Moreland and I used to be friends. We used to hang out at 3 Kings drinking tallboy PBRs. We discovered Boulder’s Illegal Pete’s together. We even caught up at The Roxy in California after his Stagecoach performance. We watched Daniel Romano and Nikki Lane woo the Hollywood crowd…each in their

The Missing Link Tour. Red Rocks. 05.03.15 It’s always amusing when someone claims they don’t like a certain genre of music. I understand not liking a band, or even an extreme subgenre like depressive black metal or horrorcore rap, but to say you don’t like country or metal or jazz just screams ignorance. That’s not

Hollywood Palomino Night. The Roxy. 04.26.15 What defines country music? Wikipedia defines it as a “genre of American popular music that originated in Southern United States in the 1920s.” It goes on to say country music “often consists of ballads and dance tunes with generally simple forms and harmonies accompanied by mostly string instruments.” I

Jamey Johnson. Joe’s Bar. 04.10.15 “My Home’s in Alabama” was being piped over the PA at Joe’s Bar on Weed Street. I was a thousand miles from home and at least half that far from Alabama. The Chicago crowd ranged from the slightly buzzed to the fall-down drunk. They were rowdy as hell as they

Fleetwood Mac. Pepsi Center. 04.01.15 Fleetwood Mac were a little before my time. Having formed in 1967 as a British blues band, Mick Fleetwood had already seen the complete transformation of personal and sound by the time I was born. In fact, up until recently, I thought the Buckingham-Nicks line-up represented the original Fleetwood Mac.

Viet Cong. Larimer Lounge. 03.24.15 The Viet Cong was a militant, communist political party that fought in Vietnam during the war from 1955 – 1975. Unimaginable atrocities were committed on both sides of that conflict, leading to hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of casualties — many of which can be attributed to the Viet Cong.

Garth Brooks. Pepsi Center. March 2015 My daughter is pretty open minded about music. She really has no choice with me as her father. That didn’t stop her from informing me that she finds country music to be boring though. There was a part of me that wanted to convince her otherwise, but then I

Ariel Pink. Bluebird Theater. 02.14.15 According to the Interweb, Ariel Pink is indie rock’s most hated man. He is a misogynistic troll who defends the rights of sexual predators and has the nerve to criticize Madonna. He is a living, breathing meme. He claims to be the male version of Grimes, but the female version

Sleater-Kinney / Lizzo. Ogden Theatre. 02.12.15 Seeing the name Sleater Kinney on the marquee at the Ogden Theatre last night was quite a sight, but it didn’t stir nostalgic emotions for everyone on Colfax. As the line stretched out in front of the theater, past Angelo’s Records to the other side of Ogden St., many

Winter on the Rocks. Red Rocks. 01.30.15 It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since I talked a group of people into going to Red Rocks in January. The first winter concert to be held at the amphitheater showcased Atmosphere and Common. I wasn’t all that excited about seeing either act, but I was extremely excited
