Mark Kozelek. The Soiled Dove Underground. 01.29.15 Many lessons were learned last time Mark Kozelek came to Denver to perform at the Soiled Dove Underground. Koz doesn’t get laid in Denver. He doesn’t drink or smoke pot. He doesn’t like the outdoors and has nothing in common with the “sporty” couples of Colorado. But the

Lucero / Drag The River. The Gothic Theatre. Englewood, Colorado. 12.29.14 Making small talk about the weather is something people do in uncomfortable situations where no other common ground can be found, but when you’re standing outside in subzero temperatures it’s the elephant that refuses to be ignored. As Gary Lee (of Gary Lee’s Motor

Rap music is about two things, lyrics and beats. Take either away and you’ve got poetry slam or bass music, neither of which I’m very fond of. So it’s a testament to El-P’s production that last night’s show worked despite the sound problems. Killer Mike and El-P are both hip-hop powerhouses in their own right,

There is a movie that came out in 1996 called Beautiful Girls. The title and trailer led many to believe it was just another chick flick, but the Scott Rosenberg/Ted Demme film was a pretty accurate study of small town America. The plot follows the lives of friends/enemies during the weekend of their high school

There was an article posted recently about the potential pitfalls of going to a show alone. There was a lot of truth hidden in the piece, once you got past the satire. Being solo at a show is something I experience at least once a month, so I was able to relate to the author’s

King Diamond is an icon. The man behind the mask is legendary on so many levels. His songwriting, storytelling, stage presence and survival skills place him in the upper echelon of heavy metal frontmen. When the “Drake vs. Lil Wayne” tour was announced, I figured it was just another clever marketing ploy. These Young Money artists share a label and a fan base, but I doubt anyone saw that announcement and didn’t immediately pick a favorite. Lil Wayne has been in the game a lot longer than Drake, so

When Sam Herring spoke of breaking the artifice last night, before closing the set out with “Little Dreamer”, I couldn’t help but wonder what he meant. Everything about Future Islands is honest. Their songs and stage presence are pure life. There is something primal about what they do – something essential. Everything about the band,
